Botswana Luxury Wing Safari

September 30 - October 12, 2007

with Lindsay Scott

Botswana's unique diversity of wildlife habitats provides some of the best game viewing and wilderness experiences Africa has to offer, from crystal clear lagoons festooned with water lilies to woodlands, forests and open grasslands. It is uncrowded, remote, pristine and safe to travel in. We will stay in camps run by Wilderness Safari's www.wilderness-safaris.com. I have used them for years, their camps are superb, service flawless, guides and staff friendly and knowledgeable. They also have a very good environmental record and are involved with the local communities and educational programs. Game viewing will be in open 4 x 4 vehicles, mokoro canoes, boats, from blinds or on guided walks. there are great opportunities for photography or just observing the abundance of mammal and bird life. Often there is wonderful game viewing from the camps. Transfer between camps is by light aircraft.

The camps are small and intimate, with even the more rustic ones having all the comforts and amenities, yet never loosing their charm. All the tents have en suite hot showers, often with additional outdoor showers. There are communal dining, lounge and bar areas and swimming pools. While at the camps all meals, local drinks, game viewing activities and laundry are included. The weather at that time of year is warm with cool mornings and is dry, it is the premium season for game viewing.

September 30 - Depart from New York on South African Airways, connecting flights from around the country will be arranged.

October 1 - Arrive Johannesburg, meet with a Wilderness representative and transfer to hotel for overnight stay.

October 2 - 3 - Chitabe Main Camp www.wilderness-safaris.com/camps/camps.jsp?map_id=2531

The next morning fly to Maun, the gateway to the Okavango Delta where we will board our light plane for a short flight to Chitabe Camp.

The camp is situated on one of the most beautiful islands in the Okavango Delta. It is a large private concession surrounded by the Moremi Game Reserve. The luxurious tented camp offers classic Okavango scenery and great wildlife viewing. The area is a strong-hold for the African wild dog, one of Africa's most endangered species, Dave and Helene Hammon's photographs featured in the book "Running Wild" on the wild dog were taken in this area.

Chitabe has a wide variety of habitats, including waterways and marshlands, dry acacia and mopane woodland, riverine areas, open grasslands and seasonal flood plains. Such diverse ecosystems in turn make for a wonderful array of of wildlife, including elephant, cape buffalo, lion, leopard and cheetah. Plains game are abundant and night drives can be very rewarding.

October 4 - 5 - Xigera Lagoon www.wilderness-safaris.com/camps/camps.jsp?map_id=2568

Situated in the heart of the delta on Paradise Island, within Moremi Game reserve, Xigera is a superb, luxury tented camp, surrounded by permanent water. The raised, tented, en suite rooms are built within a shady forest, yet each has a superb view of the waterhole and game-filled flood plain. The dining and pub area is under thatch, overlooking the river that flows past the front of the camp. There is a plunge pool. Activities focus mainly on mokoro rides through the quiet waterways, boat and walking safaris, game drives are possible depending on the water levels in the delta. Rarities such as the sitatunga antelope may be seen. The birding is excellent, with Pel's Fishing Owl, Slaty Egret and Wattled Crane amongst the many species regularly sighted. We can also see a wide variety of game animals in this tranquil and private area.

October 6 - 7 - Duma Tau www.wilderness-safaris.com/camps/camps.jsp?map_id=2527

This is one of the more rustic camps, but a particular favorite of mine. It is set in riverine forest overlooking a lagoon on the Linyanti River system. Their is a tremendous diversity of habitat around the camp making it a haven for wildlife. There is access to the open grasslands of the Savuti Channel, a great area for cheetah, lion and leopard, the waterholes and riverine ecosystem and inland mopane and acacia woodland. Elephants are one of the areas biggest attractions, often spending much time in camp. There is a great diversity of wildlife in the area, from bush babies to sable antelope and an abundance of plains game.
Duma Tau offers day and night drives, cruises on the pontoon boat, walks and a number of hides for undisturbed game viewing, one of the best of these is at the source of the Savuti Channel where many species of game and bird life can be enjoyed.

October 8 - 9 - Mombo Camp. www.wilderness-safaris.com/camps/camps.jsp?map_id=2553

This is THE PLACE, with out a doubt the most sought after camp in the delta. Hidden form the world and situated deep with in the Moremi Game Reserve on a scenic island just off Chief's Island is the secret paradise of Mombo. It's reputation as one of the most renown camps in all of Africa is well deserved. Its unequaled game viewing record has made it the top wildlife documentary location in Botswana, for the likes of National Geographic and BBC. White and black rhino have recently been introduced to the area, offering the only chance to see these great creatures in Botswana. The environment is a mosaic of magnificent open savannah landscapes with thorn trees and Illala palms, marshes and flood plains.

Each of the luxuriously appointed tents is raised off the ground and has wonderful views and game viewing over the flood plains, especially from your private cabana and outdoor shower. Raised walkways link the tents and living area. The cuisine is superb, it even has it's own recipe book.

October - 10 - 11 Victoria Falls http://www.victoriafallshotel.com/

To ease us gently back into civilization we will have two nights in the grand old Victoria Falls Hotel. Refurbished in the authentic colonial style it provides an oasis from which to explore the magnificent Victoria Falls, described by Livingstone as a place where "angels soar", one of the natural wonders of the world. There will be plenty of time to explore the township of Victoria Falls and its wonderful selection African crafts or arrange any number of activities from helicopter rides, white water rafting, elephant rides to bungee jumping or just relax by the pool.
